Desert death Trap

Newkirk, aka "Desert Death Trap," is an abandoned town located off Interstate 40 in New Mexico. Notable sites include two non-extant fuel stations, Vista Mini Mart and Wilkerson's Country Store. In the late 1930s, "Dead Man's Curve" and "Sure Death Bridge" were fatal landmarks along the stretch of U.S. Route 66 passing through Newkirk before the highway was eventually rerouted to mitigate the dangers.
